What is my purpose? : Family Devotion

God has a plan for you

Why am I here?

What is my purpose?

Have those statements ever crossed your mind?  They have mine, and I bet they have yours as well. It is in our nature to need a sense of purpose. And it’s not just adults that wonder these questions. Kids wonder too. Even at a young age they are thinking about what they want to be when they grow up. Just ask them— see what they say.

Sure, their answer will change as they grow, gain experience, figure out who they are and how God wired them.

As I grow and gain experience, and see wisdom, I continue to ask myself the question- what is my purpose. Whether your purpose is the same, or it is changing, one thing will not change. You have a purpose. I have a purpose. God created us all unique, to do things only we can do. Part of our responsibility is to figur eout what that purpose is.

While your kids are young, start helping them figure out what God’s purpose is for them.

Below is a devotional written to help you with those conversations. You can do it all in one sitting, but it was meant to be spread out over a week, with a say in between each part.  Read if over and decide what is best for you and your family, and use it as a guideline to have some meaningful, spiritual conversations with your kids.

What is my purpose?

Think about it— What do you want to be when you grown up?  Do you know what your future holds?  God has a special plan for each and every one of us.  What do you think God has planned for you?

What does the bible say?

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Read 2 Peter 3:8-11 then discuss the questions together:

What does God want for all people?

How does he want us to live our lives?

How do you live a ‘holy’ life?

Read Ephesians 6:1-4 then discuss the questions together:

What does God wants kids to do?

What is the reward for honoring your parents?

How can you honor your parents?

Final thought:

So you know God has plans for you, but do you know what they are?  As you read this week, the first thing God wants for you to do is to love and follow him, and honor your parents.  As you are faithful in that while you are young, God will reveal more of His plan for your live as you grow up.  He will not hide his plan for you, but sometimes you may have to ask Him what He would want you to do.

What is my purpose?

Why am I here?

Next time you think those questions, or if someone asks you, you may not have all the answers, but you now have a beginning point.

You can decide today that you want to follow God’s plan for your life.  Start by praying and asking Him to guide you toward His plan.  Then be faithful in honoring your parents and reading your bible and praying, and God will be faithful and lead you where he wants you to be.
