Light of the World activity: Make a Glow Jar

how to make a glow jar and includes family devotion about being the light of the world
This family devotion was included in the Church of God's girls curriculum!

The Bible tells us a lot about light.  God’s word lights our path. That means that as we read it, we will learn what God would want us to do.  Jesus says he is the light of the world.  Darkness refers to the devil and the things he wants us to do.  Just like when you turn on a flashlight in a dark room, the darkness goes away, Jesus will make the darkness of the devil go away also.

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

Luke 11:33
“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.

John 8:12
I am the light of the world

Matthew 5:14
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Jesus says we also are the light of the world.  When Jesus is in our lives, and we live for him, our lives will shine with light in a dark world.

Try this to demonstrate:light of the world

You will need:
a clear glass cup, mason jar, or vase
glow bracelets
scissors
dark room

(You should practice this ahead of time)

Tell everyone that we are like the glass jar.  Turn off the light and see what happens.  Nothing happens.  When we live in darkness (doing what the devil wants us to do) we are no different, and we do not have God’s light inside of us.

*Adult only:  Very carefully break the bracelets so they start to glow.  Cut off the end and pour the liquid into the jar.  Do this with a few different color bracelets to create a more dramatic effect.  Explain that when we ask Jesus to forgive us, and help us live a life for him, that he will live in us and help us.  Jesus is like the liquid from the bracelets.  Sprinkle the liquid into the jar.  With the colored liquid in the jar, remind everyone again

Luke 11:33
“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.

Now turn off the lights and watch what happens.  “You are the light of the world” when Jesus is with you!

The glow will last a few hours, just like the bracelets do.  And don’t worry, you can rinse out the liquid and use your jar again.  It is not permanent. Be careful though of possible slivers of glass.  Have fun!directions on how to make a glow jar and includes family devotion
