Gardening Tips for Life part 2: What’s Choking You?

Gardening tips for life part 2
What’s choking you?

Last time I shared a little about pruning that I learned from my gardening experience.  This time I want to share another gardening tip that can also apply to everyday life.

I love my garden.  It really is a stress relieving activity.  It is a way to spend time with and teach my daughter, who is growing up loving her garden.  It is a great alternative to buying produce from the store.  But it is not all fun and games.

I hate weeding. The bad thing is if I don’t pull the weeds, they will soon overtake my plants.  The weeds take the same resources that my plants do, but those resources are wasted.  The weeds steal the nutrients from the soil.  They steal the water that my plants would use.  And the weeds produce nothing of benefit.  If they were left on their own, they would choke out and kill my plants.

Matthew 13:7, 22

Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth  choke it, making it unfruitful.

The same is true with me.  I have things in my life that I do that take up resources from things that would be more beneficial.  A few of the resources I can think of are time, money, and effort/strength.  I sometimes find ways to spend time that are wasteful, and other things suffer because of it.  If I spend too much effort on meaningless tasks I become too tired to do important things.  It is easy to find ways to spend money that are not very wise.  These things will begin to choke us, and will overtake us if we let them.

Take a few minutes and think about some weeds that may be growing in your garden of life.  Are you going to continue to let them steal your resources and choke out some more important things?  Or will you pull those weeds by the roots and toss them into the fire, so they can’t bother you anymore?

What are some of your weeds?  Do you have any ‘gardening tips’ to share?
